Overview
Located in the Mid-West region in Ireland, Limerick is the fourth largest city on the island of Ireland. It is the principal town in Limerick county, and is home to approximately 90,000 residents. Limerick's population, like most urban centres in Ireland, is a fusion of many diverse cultures and backgrounds, with significant African, Polish and other national communities calling the 'treaty city' their home. Limerick has a mild and wet climate, and the River Shannon, the longest river in the British Isles, flows through the city.
The City has a long and distinctive history, with many artifacts of the city's previous occupiers throughout the centuries still visible today. The city dates from at least the Viking settlement in 812, where the river side location encouraged settlement. The Normans redesigned the city in the 12th century and added much of the most notable architecture, such as King John's Castle. The City has played a significant role in many of Ireland's most notable periods in History, acting as a battle site during the civil wars of the 17th Century, with armies under Oliver Cromwell besieging the city. The city's label as the 'treaty city' is derived from the signing of the Treaty of Limerick in 1691.
The City is home to a large number of cultural activities, with a lively sports scene, arts scene and a range of Museums and Galleries. In particular, the city has often been termed Ireland's 'capital of sport', due to the level of sporting activity in the city. Multiple European Rugby Champions, Munster Rugby Club, are based in the city's historic, and recently re-developed, Thomond Park Stadium.
The city is one of the Mid-West Region's most important Business and Commerce centres, with several of the World's largest corporations, including Vistakon and Analogue Devices, setting up significant operations in the city. Limerick is also an important Educational centre, playing host to the University of Limerick and Limerick Institute of Technology.
